I had a similar problem with my 97 Savage. Also, the bike did not want to idle at times. It was the petcock. I now ride the bike with the petcock in the prime position. If you take this approach there are two disadvantages.
1) No reserve.
2) You MUST remember to put the petcock in the on (or reserve) position when the bike is parked to eliminate the possibility of float bowl overflow.
